Treatment of Bed Bug Bites

There are different remedies in the treatment of Bed Bug Bites. The question is which treatment would better work for you. Not every treatment works the same for everyone like one might for another. In the end you really want to get rid of the rash and itchiness.

The treatment of bed bug bites using calamine lotion

One common treatment known as calamine lotion is used in the treatment of bedbug bites. It is a pink lotion that comes in a pink bottle. This lotion is like a dry liquid that you would apply onto the affected area on a regular basis and it dries the bumps out and stops the itching. Keep in mind that this medication doesn’t work right away. On the first 24 hrs of applying it, you will notice that the bedbug bites aren’t itching as much.

The treatment of bed bug bites using Hydrocortisone

A second over the counter medicine that you can use for bedbug bites, is a corticosteroid like Hydrocortisone. The itching and scaling will be reduced when using this medicine; eventually leading to the bite going away. There are other corticosteroid medicines that can be bought as well over the counter and they will work just the same. Do not scratch the bites, no matter how much they itch. Believe it or not, some people don’t even get affected by the bug bites as far as the itching goes, which is rare. They still should take care of the but problem, even through they won’t need a treatment of bed bug bites.

Treat the problem not the symptom

You need to ensure that while you are giving yourself a treatment of bed bug bites, that you are also taking care of the issue around your home. You will need to wash and treat your carpet, clothing, and bed clothes. Anything that the bedbugs might hide in should be treated with bug spray. You will need to wash your clothing and pillows in hot water, which is more effective in getting rid of the bedbugs because they hate hot temperatures. Take all of the measures possible to get rid of them. You won’t get rid of the bedbugs over night, you must stay consistent with it and over time they will surely decrease. The treatment of bed bug bites is just the first step

  1. I traveled to New York this summer. Would you believe it? There were bedbugs in my pricey Manhatten hotel room. I ended up carrying them home with me. Oh what a chore to tidy up.

  2. Bed Bugs Extermination on September 22nd, 2010 at 11:39 am

I hate bed bugs! I have tried using the over the counter medications but it’s still very itchy. I know it’s not good to scratch them but I just can’t help it. Funny thing though, my friend has also been bitten by bed bugs and it’s not as visible as mine. I guess bed bug bites appear different on every person.

  3. Hi my name is Cathy and I believe I have bed bugs. A few years ago I went to Australia and a few weeks later returning I ended up with bug bite all over while I was sleeping, but my husband wasn’t getting any . I seen several doctors for the rash and and they couldn’t come up with anything, Well all of a sudden 2 years later I am getting itchy welts all over again, and I did find a bug on my wall and when I squished it , it was all blood. I bombed the bedroom and went to the laundry mat and hot washed everything. I am so tired of itching all over and I want them gone. I can’t afford to have anyone come and get rid of them for me. Help

  4. Try food grade diatomaceous earth(mother earth good brand) – a powder that can be bought inexpensively online. buy a puffer and fill all cracks w/powder(baseboard, outlet covers, etc) – spread powder on floor if u have hardwood, sweep around to create a thin layer, wear a painter’s mask, put bed and box spring in a bed bug bag (expensive), wash, wash, wash in hot water w/ bleach. dry on hot – may need 2 cycles.
leave for 2 weeks min. Treat the bedframe and all furniture. good luck.

  5. Hello my name is Nathan and I work for a pest control company. I actually go to schools, hospitals, and hotels to train staff on bedbug prevention and what to do in the case of infestation. Bedbugs have been found to be pyrethrin resistant so diatomaceous earth is a good product to use like wendy said but unfortunately if it gets wet it is no longer useful. Bedbug sprays found at retail stores can work too but it is more where you spray then what you spray. You have to find all the hiding spots to do a good treatment. A vacuum and gloves are also a good idea when treating. Bedbugs have not shown any ability to carry pathogens but they work almost the same way as a mosquito and they carry a lot of problems. I fear it may be just a matter of time before they are found to carry something. If anyone would like me to post my treatment method just post back on here and I’ll get it up here for you. Have a Marry Christmas!

  6. Nathan, me and two other ladys take care of this lady in her home. well one of the workers ended up having bedbugs in her home and didn’t tell anyone. the lady kept on getting bit and we didn’t know why….so lastnight we found the bedbug on her blanket. I would like to know the treatment that you use….Thank You

  8. Wash your bites with a good liquid dish detergent, rinse with water as hot as you can stand, pour hydrogen peroxide on the area. You will feel relief immediately. I stand in the tub for this.

  9. Sorry Marcia that it took me so long to answer, this email had gone into the spam folder. First strip all linens and gather all clothing so you can wash all on the same day. If it is a major infestation do not allow the items to sit in a basket place them in trash bags tied off at the top to keep the little guys in their place. Pull her bed away from the wall and inspect the matress and bed fram with a flash light. If you find a lot of insects, insect parts, or small black dots with a redish hue to them then your may want to try a pro. I would go to a feed supply or pest control company any purchase stuff for bed bugs but not the stuff you find at a big box store. Treat the entire room including the matress, box spring, headboard, baseboard, under furniture, and a bit by electrical sockets. Look for the traces of them. I hope this helps you combat bedbugs.

  10. ES HORRIBLE, A MI Y A MIS DOS NIETAS NOS PICARON EN EL HOTEL QUALITY INN NORTH EN ORLANDO, ACABARON CON NUESTRAS VACACIONES, LLEVO 10 DIAS CON CORTICOIDE Y SIGO CON PRURITO Y MANCHAS.

  11. My siblings all still live at my mother’s house. We are all in our mid to late forties and early fidties. I have my own home, been here for about 12 years. They got bedbugs a couple of years ago and instead of calling a pro, everyojne sat around waiting for someone else to pay for the work to get done. It’s a huge house they live in. Long story short, i quit going over there as soon as i heard about the bugs, but they kept visiting my home. Yes, finally, i am waking up with huge swollen bumps on my butt, my hips and my back. I am disabled and have a little bit of difficulty getting around. I am so angry at them for continuing to visit me when they knew they had this situation in their own house. I am furious. The bugs are on/in my couch because that is where i sleep. I have a young daughter who I no lonbger let sit i the lving room because i am afraid she’ll get bitten too. I was supposed to start my own photgraphy business this week, but now, instead of paying the rent for my shop i have to take that money nd put it on getting rid of these bugs. I am thinkinbg of not having anything else to do with my siblings and my mother because they knew how afraid I was of getting their bugs and they kept coming by uninvited. I do not know which is more annoying, the uninvited and inconsiderate family members or the damned bugs. I would never do this to anyone else. I wouldn’t even start my business if i could because i wouldn’t want to inadvertently send home any of these bugs with my customers. not good for business, you know? I was going to do the photography out of my home if I couldn’t come up with money to rent the shop…but now i can’t even do that. this is really messing up my life. I’ve got bills to pay and the equipment Ive amssed over the past couple of years can afford me a very nice new career since my disability ended my prior career. I am now wearing clothing that is tucked into my pants and socks stretched over my pants. I hope I can get rid of these bugs and get my business going. I had my fliers all made up for a Mother’s Day Special grand opening sale.

  12. Mrs Paulson, that is one good reason to not have your family over! the worst part is if you get rid of them and the family comes over their is a very good chance that you will get reinfested. You may want to try bed bug traps…..bought online and set up around the bed. They won’t solve the problem totally but they will use CO2 to attact the bugs away from you. They aren’t foolproof because a bedbug will also use heat to find a good place to bite when close enough.

  13. HELP for people with BED BUGS BEDBUGS UGH !!!

We got bedbugs after giving a car ride to some people who needed help. They were in our house only an hour. At first we didn’t know what was biting us, but figured it out.

/ BEDBUGS. *HOW to GET RID*

*** Change the bedding, wash in hot water. Vacuum the mattress, couch, carpet, Etc. TOSS the vac-bag.

THEN >>> SPREAD DE ( Diatomacious Earth ). <<< It is a dust made from dirt. IMPORTANT… You need food-grade DE which is available at FEED STORES. NOT the stuff from a pool store. They use it to get rid of bugs in barns and feed areas. It is messy, BUT WORKS GREAT ! SPRINKLE or DUST it around and on mattress and bed legs with a dry paint brush as it goes farther. 2 pounds goes pretty far. Then vacuum it up after a few days and RE-APPLY. I even put it on my arms & legs to sleep! It worked. the bugs breath it and die. Aft6er dusting the mattress & throwing away the PILLOWS ( too hard to Dust/clean) GET a mattress cover designed for bedbugs . Dust that mattress and enclose the dust inside the new cover. OR get a new mattress if you have lots of money. This system works. Good luck. Bedbugs suck !

  20. My family and I just recently moved out of state and are having to stay with my in laws. They are not the cleanest people ever which is a big problem for me considering I’m OCD.well the first night being here I got eaten alive by bed bugs and I seem to be the only one they want to bite. My husband went and got some spray to put down and it seemed to kill them on contact but they keep coming back. No one is willing to go the extra mile to get rid of them. I don’t understand how they can just live with these things I want to take everything out of here and burn it. These bugs are seriously causing me to have a nervous break down. I get bit on my eyelids my fingers the bottom of my feet. I swear I get bit at least 10 times a night. They get so swollen it looks about the size of a golf ball and my fingers get so bad that I can barely move them. I have tried about every cream out there to try to help and nothing works, I just need some kind of relief. I can’t even sleep at night Im scratching so much. I am also 6 months pregnant and I wonder if this could be bad for the health of my baby. I am too embarrassed to asked the doctors or even go out in public. The bites are just All over me and it looks like I have something. I know we are not going to get rid of the problem because we can’t do it alone but hopefully there is some kind of relief out there until we can get the heck out of here.

  21. Garden Safe Cawling Insect Killer Containing Diatomaceous Earth works great and kills bed buggs on contact you can buy it at Lowe’s for about $9.00 for a 4lb bag Good luck!!!

  22. Unfortunately I have had these d@mned bugs in my apartment for at least 6 months, and now I have found they are all over the place. I have several hundred bites I think–they are like a rash of little welts that itch like crazy (I read some lucky people don’t even notice though).

I had no idea what these bugs were the first time I found them, I thought I was getting bitten by mosquitoes or spiders. I work in a bar and have lots of single dollar bills sitting around in little folded bundles from keeping them in my pants pockets, and I kept a bunch of these bundles in a little backpack which I was using as a cushion under my knee where I sit on the floor for hours at a time looking at the laptop. One night I opened a bundle in the process of getting ready for the bank, and all these little bugs were crawling around.

Like an idiot I didn’t pay much attention, but then figured it out after I realized that leg had all these ‘spider bites’.

Since then it has gotten much worse, I have bites all over my legs and lower back and elbows–I can’t go outside to beach or pools in summer because it looks awful. And I just found 5-6 little nests in my bed and couch too!!

ALCOHOL WILL KILL THEM DEAD INSTANTLY. That’s the good news. The bad news–not the eggs, and they will crawl all over laying eggs and hiding. If you are a slob like, me, you are well and truly you-know-whatted by these horrible bugs…

  23. I have what I believe to be bedbugs, but they don’t seem to only come out at night. Is there something similiar to bedbugs that come out during the day as well?

  25. I came back from a friend’s place whom I discovered had bed bugs. Once I got home I put all my clothes in the washer and dryer as well as put everything else in plastic bags. I took a hot shower and at that time did not notice any bites on my. After a few hrs waking up from a nap, I discovered my whole body swollen red patches from face to toes. It looks so scary and disgusting. The bumps are raised so high that it makes my arm and legs look weird. I can’t help itching and try not to scratch it, but my worse concern is bringing the bugs back to my place. I took every precaution measure and hope that that is not the case. Do you know what my chances are having bed bugs now even if I did all that?

  26. i have these reddish bumps (about 3 of them) on my neck in a straight line. im embarrassed to go anywhere because theyre there and they make me feel so self concious. i just came back form a hotel in california and i think tht is where i got them from. they are SO ITCHY & i have them on my legs and arms too. please someone tell me what to do to mkae these embarrassing bumps go away fast. thx

  27. My son just got a big promotion as manager of a big company and moved to a new town. He is stressed to the max because he has two new employees he has to train and two big bosses that keep popping in to check on him! The store is opened 7 days a week from 7am to 7pm so he can’t take off!
Now he is dealing with the pain and aggravation of bed bug bites! He is staying in a motel room at his own expense while the bedroom he is renting is being sprayed!
He has tried everything and nothing has stopped the itching! He is running fever and feels drained! He is getting very discouraged and he is only 26!

  29. I just moved in with my grandmother almost a month ago i started getting bit about a week ago.My daughter sleeps in bed with me most nights and she has not gotten bit, everyone thought it was just me because im pregnant. But i found a bug at the top of my curtian lastnight so today we totally striped my room cleaned out the closet but we didnt see one bug and there are no signs none in box spring and there is a plastic cover already on my matress(she previously had them months ago and treated. I read on a wbsite lastnight that using Diatacaeous earth will end the problem so i sparyed everything and every crack of everything with hot shot bed bug killer then bought some DE and sprinkled it in closet (which is empty) around my bed and between my matress and box spring! So my question(s) is all the DE i had seen pics of were white powder the stuff at my local feed store was tan just about brown so is that the right stuff is it ok? and second the wbsites told me to put it near my bed and btwn my matress but ive been reading today on a diffrent website not to put in areas that you could potential inhale it so is that safe i put it around my bed and btwn my matress? I was relaxed and finally calm ready to get a good nights sleeps thinking i settled this problem now i am worried me and my daughter are breathing this in and could be harmful some advice please?

  31. Diatacaeous earth will try this! on November 7th, 2011 at 4:46 pm

I posted about these d@mned bugs back in July. I am no good at the kind of thorough cleaning and exhaustive effort required to eradicate them, and have simply suffered with them for all these months, biting me all over, leaving hideous rashes so I cannot be seen in a bathing suit even though I live in Florida. Now sleep is becoming a problem as well. And let me tell you, they don’t just come out at night, because I work at night and sleep in the day mostly, and they will chew your @ss right up night and day both.

I have had so many things going on I figured I could deal with it later & kept putting it off–thinking well they are really no worse than mosquitoes even if they itch a little more and the bites–well yes the bites look absolutely HORRIBLE, but the longer I wait the more angry I get and the less easily I sleep knowing they are all over my bed crawling all over biting me all the time. If it were just the bigger ones you can see and douse with alcohol and laugh as they die instantly in convulsions, it would be a different story.

But no what you eventually realize is that as many, if not more of these horrible ugly furiously itching bites are caused by the little tiny ones you can barely see AT ALL!!!

So I am finally taking action. I was going to bomb the place with poison even though I hate that stuff, I was that desperate. But instead I have thankfully read about this Diatacaeous earth which is so safe you can EAT the stuff, and kills all bugs when they breathe it, and lasts forever. people have even written that they put it on their arms to help them sleep–it’s that safe.

This is the stuff for me! I’ll sleep in it if I have to, in order to kill these vile bugs that have kept me from enjoying any kind of romantic life for 6-8 months now…

  32. Diatacaeous earth will try this! on November 21st, 2011 at 6:21 pm

OK update on the diatacaeous earth. It will kill them, but it’s not the miracle answer either. I’ve even seen them crawling in the stuff, which I dumped all around my bed and where I sit to use the computer–the two places they are concentrated in my apartment.

I suspect using it has killed half or more of them, and I suspect that if I were more diligent in its proper application–not just dumping it all over but making sure it clouds up and drifts and gets into all the hiding places etc. But it’s not like they all die right away or die the minute they get some of it on them, not at all.

Ironically enough, they have started crawling on me more noticeably when I am trying to sleep–I think because I didn’t dump the stuff right in the middle of the bed lol, where I also have two big body pillows (I should probably just toss them away and probably will, but I like them a lot). I am thinking they are trying to get away from where the powder has been liberally dumped, and that means crawling in and on those pillows, and on me!

I’m going to keep periodically spreading more and making sure it puffs up in the clouds that will kill them much more effectively. I will keep you all posted on my progress.

Oh and one thing I have found really helps with the itching, at least temporarily–that is to run the hottest water you can stand on the rash areas, in your bathtub. I am betting a hottub would work wonders…

  33. Diatacaeous earth will try this! on November 24th, 2011 at 7:43 am

Ok read up a bit on this and apparently these little bugs will crawl right across the stuff that kills them to get a bite of you. It will kill them, but it can take a while. But the foating dust does seem to bother them–unfortunately I have not been dumping the powder in the middle of the bed–and I seem to be getting bitten there more now! but I do think it’s working. And a lot of the bugs I do see still alive look like they are in bad shaoe.
