Bed Bugs Found: Urban Public Housing, Urban, Illinois

The current residents of the Urban Public Housing have a problem they are dealing with, that problem is bed bugs. They are also not happy with the way that management is dealing with the issue. They feel that there should be more involvement of a bed bug exterminator instead of treatment for the insects once in a while.

Management of the complex says that they have treated around 39 apartments and have more scheduled for treatment in the next few weeks. They believe that residents are bringing back in infested furniture after the maintenance staff takes it outside. The solution is that the staff will start to break the infested furniture after it is brought outside. This is not sitting well with some residents

Resident Dorothy Goines says some residents don’t want to throw away their furniture and that she has an heirloom loveseat that can’t be replaced.

There are ways to treat large items such as furniture, the use of heat can kill the bed bugs. Although heat treatment works, the cost of it can be prohibitive. Many times getting rid of the furniture is the most cost effective way to deal with the situtation.

Bed bug bites, although not having any long term side effects do itch a lot for those that get bitten. A topical cream can be used to decrease the level of itching a person has.
