Bed Bugs Found: Syracuse, New York
Bed bugs aren’t just a problem being seen in New York City, but also in most of central New York. Syracuse, New York is one city that is seeing a an increase in infestations. The city is trying to get landlords and tenants to work together to deal with the issue. Many say that education on the topic is one of the best ways to limit the migration of these bugs.
There are about 20 landlords that have signed up for an upcoming session in the are about bed bugs from the Syracuse Tenants Network. The Syracuse Tenants Network stated that around twenty percent of the calls that they receive from tenants are about bed bugs. AS far as what the network says about the infestations:
Greater Syracuse Tenants Network Sharon Sherman told NewsChannel9, “You can conquer this, but it’s going to take a lot of work.”
Syracuse doesn’t have any laws on the books about bed bugs, this means that the tenant is responsible for paying for the treatment. A bed bug exterminator can cost thousands of dollars to totally take care of the issue. Many are saying that landlords are trying to pitch in, but it can be hard.
“Landlords on the North Side of Syracuse might only be getting $500 to $600 rent per month per apartment. So, we’re talking about a substantial cost,” Sherman said.
The money isn’t the only issue, there is a lot of work that needs to be done in the months it can take to get rid of bed bugs. There isn’t a single smoking gun that will get rid of the bugs, it simply takes time and multiple treatments.
The Greater Syracuse Tenants Network is holding the conference on October 11, 2011. Contact them for a spot as they feel it will sell out.
